Arm, thigh and buttock lifts are surgical techniques to eliminate loose and sagging skin. Excess skin and fat is removed from the area to tighten and recontour.
The procedure is usually performed in an outpatient surgical center, and takes approximately 2-3 hours. Dr. Martin lifts and removes the excess skin down to the muscle and removes the thick layer of fat beneath the skin. Drain tubes may be placed at the incision to draw out fluids.
This procedure offers minimal downtime. Most patients usually return to work in less than a week. A surgical garment is work for 6 weeks following surgery.
Liposuction is a procedure to remove localized collections of fatty tissue in several areas of the body. By using a specialized suction technique, Dr. Martin can suction fat from multiple areas of the body.
The increasing popularity of suction lipectomy is due to the safety of the technique but certainly requires an artistic touch for good results. Liposuction leaves only minute scars, often as short as one-half inch long.
Suction lipectomy is not a substitute for the results achieved through proper diet and exercise, nor is it a cure for obesity. To get the most from this procedure, you should be at a reasonable weight that you can maintain long term with a reasonable diet and level of exercise. Suction lipectomy removes fat, but will not eliminate dimpling (i.e.-cellulite) or tighten loose skin.
Sometimes after multiple pregnancies or substantial weight loss, abdominal muscles weaken, and skin in the area becomes flacid. Abdominoplasty can tighten the abdominal muscles and, in some instances, remove stretch marks from the lower abdomen. In men and women who have fat that is concentrated in the abdomen, but who are otherwise of relatively normal weight, the procedure will remove excess skin and fat. The surgery will not eliminate minor wrinkling or take the place of dieting, but it can improve a loss of skin elasticity with slight obesity in older individuals.
To smooth out the abdomen, the surgeon works through a low abdominal incision that spans the hips. Scar maturation takes approximately one year for optimum results.
Recovery from a tummy tuck will require two weeks off of work. Most patients can return to normal activity with limited rest in four weeks following surgery.
Overly large, sagging breasts may not only cause concern due to their appearance but may also interfere with normal function and physical activity. This can lead to back pain, postural problems, deformities of the back and shoulders, skin rashes under the breasts and breast pain. Breast reduction can alleviate or correct these problems as well as improve the shape of the breasts and nipple areas.
This surgical procedure involves removing excess breast tissue and skin. As a result of this surgery, the entire breast is both lifted and reduced in size.
Most cases return to work in less than a week following the surgery. Following the surgery, a surgical bra is worn for approximately 4 weeks.
The breast lift operation raises and recontours loose, sagging breasts. Frequently, a woman elects this surgery after losing a considerable amount of weight, or losing volume and tone in her breasts after having children.
In a breast lift, the surgeon relocates the nipple and areola to a higher position, repositions the breast tissue to a higher level, removes excess skin from the lower portion of the breast and then reshapes the remaining breast skin. If you have your breasts enlarged as well as lifted, an implant may be placed behind your breast tissue or chest muscle. Mastopexy scars are permanent but will fade to some extent over time.
Gynecomastia –male breasts
Gynecomastia is the development of breast tissue on men. This can be very small to quite large and can be unilateral or bilateral. In the neonatal period, 60 – 90% of male infants develop transient palpable breast tissue because of the mother’s estrogen. Gynecomastia in the newborn usually regresses spontaneously within the first year of life. In puberty, 50-70% of adolescents develop gynecomastia but by age 17, only 10% of males have persistent gynecomastia. Finally, 25-70% of men between 50 and 69 years of age have from some degree of gynecomastia. Symptoms of gynecomastia include swelling, pain, tenderness, and occasionally nipple discharge.
Medications can cause gynecomastia and include anti-androgens used to treat prostate conditions. These include flutamide, finasteride (Proscar, Propecia) and spironolactone (Aldactone), and anabolic steroids. Gynecomastia can develop in HIV-positive men receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Efavirenz is commonly associated with gynecomastia. Other medications include diazepam tricyclic antidepressants, antibiotics, cimetidine, and some forms of chemotherapy.
Substances that can cause gynecomastia include alcohol, amphetamines, marijuana, heroin, anabolic steroids, methadone, and health conditions that affect normal hormone balance.
Generally, gynecomastia isn’t a serious problem, but it can be tough to cope with psychologically. Males with Gynecomastia often suffer feelings of embarrassment. For most men, getting off offending medications or drugs and/or weight control is enough to correct the problem. But for some the best solution is to reduce and sometimes reshape their breast by surgery. Methods for removing the excess breast tissue include liposuction and/or excision of the excess breast tissue and rarely skin excision. These procedures are usually combined for optimal effect. Having the extra breast tissue removed can have a positive psychological effect in improving confidence, self-esteem, and overall quality of life.
Augmentation Mammoplasty is a common procedure that has been available since the 1960’s. Implants are used to enlarge small, underdeveloped breasts, breasts that are of different sizes, or breasts that have atrophied and decreased in size after a childbirth and breast feeding. The primary goal of this surgery is to increase breast size and volume but can also be used to restore lost volume from weight loss or pregnancy.
The breast augmentation enhances the size and shape of the patient’s natural breast. A breast lift can be done in conjunction with an augmentation to lift and change the overall aesthetics of the breast if that is required.
Breast implants have vastly improved since the late 1990’s and now come in a variety of shapes, textures, sizes, and compositions. The implants are chosen to suit each person’s unique anatomy and goals. The implants include Silicone Cohesive Gel implants, single lumen saline implants, and multi-lumen saline implants. Implants can be round or teardrop shaped and some implants contain a combination of Silicone and Saline in the same implant.
Incisions are always made to keep scars as inconspicuous as possible. The possible locations for the incision can include the lower breast crease, around the aerola, and in the axilla. Periumbilical placement of implants can be done but I find these are rarely indicated.
The procedure typically takes about an hour to complete. All patients are out of bed and walking the day of surgery. Most patients can return to work in 3 days following surgery but are on light duty with no tennis, jogging, aerobics, or heavy weights for the first 3 weeks after surgery. After surgery, exercises are started 3 to 4 days after surgery and patients usually can return to an underwire bra in approximately 6 weeks. After surgery, most patients feel stiff and sore like they have done too many Pectoralis exercises in the gym and some mom’s describe the feeling after surgery much like when their milk came in after pregnancy.
Young, healthy-looking skin contains an abundance of a naturally hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid (HA). But as you age, sunlight and other factors can reduce the amount of HA in your skin. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule. Much like a sponge, its primary function is to bind and absorb water, which creates volume in the face. In this way, Hyaluronic acid can be thought of as the body’s internal moisturizer. But, as we age, HA diminishes, which contributes to the presence of lines and folds. JUVÉDERM® XC injectable gel works to correct this by restoring hyaluronic acid in your skin, helping to diminish wrinkles and nasolabial folds. The lack of HA causes your skin to lose structure and volume, creating unwanted facial wrinkles and folds – like those parentheses lines around your nose and mouth.Using a dermal filler like JUVÉDERM® XC is a safe and effective way to replace the HA your skin has lost, bringing back its volume and smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds.
Not all HA dermal fillers are created equal. It’s safe and effective for different skin types. JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has proven its safety and effectiveness in persons of color. Studies with JUVÉDERM® showed no increased risk of hyperpigmentation or hypertrophic scarring in patients of color.
Only JUVÉDERM® is so smooth. Other hyaluronic acid fillers currently on the market are made of granular consistency gels, but our unique manufacturing process (HYLACROSS™) creates a smooth-consistency gel that flows easily into the skin and provides a smooth, natural look and feel—so everyone will notice (but no one will know)!
Aging skin and wrinkles result from a combination of many factors. It’s not just about cellular changes, collagen depletion, hormone loss, or damage caused by free radicals. The 11s – those vertical lines that appear between your brows – result from muscle contractions. When you concentrate, squint, or frown, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. After years of frequent contraction, those wrinkles can linger even after the muscles are at rest.
BOTOX® Cosmetic works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes the persistent lines to form between the brows.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple, non-surgical procedure for temporarily reducing the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines – the vertical frown lines between the eyebrows that look like an “11” – in adult women and men aged 18 to 65.
BOTOX® Cosmetic reduces the activity of the muscles that cause the “11s” to form by blocking nerve impulses that trigger wrinkle-causing muscle contractions, creating an improved appearance between the brows. Results can last up to four months and may vary with each patient.
Our expressions often are visible signs of how we feel. A browlift is best suited for someone who has a low brow that gives the look of being tired or has deep expression lines across the forehead. A forehead lift smooths brow furrows and helps to restore a more youthful and relaxed appearance to the face.
The scars are hidden within the hairline for minimal visibility. Bruising and swelling are typical on the upper and lower eyelids following the surgery. Makeup can be used to camflouge but it will take up to 2 weeks to reside. At least 7-10 days is recommended before returning to work.
Nose surgery can create a positive change in appearance by reshaping, reducing or augmenting the nose and restoring balance to the face as well as increasing self confidence. The procedure can range from narrowing or changing the shape of the nasal tip, treating a “bump” on the bridge of the nose to reducing the width of the nose, nostrils or distance between the upper lip and nose. This surgery may also become a functional rather than aesthetic need at which time a Rhinoplasty may be combined with Septoplasty surgery to improve breathing.
The amount of bruising following surgery will depend on many factors mainly which type of Rhinoplasty was performed. If any work has been done to the nasal bridge the bruising will be more substantial than if only cartilage work has been performed on the tip. Most bruising has subsided in a week but can last for up to two weeks and is easily covered with a good mineral makeup. Puffiness, stuffy nose, headache and swelling are common for a short time after surgery. Patients quickly resume daily activity and usually return to work in one week.
Ear surgery can improve asymmetry and proportion to the face by reducing the size of the ear. This surgery can be performed on children as young as 4 extending into adulthood. General surgery is required for Otoplasty surgery and takes approximately 2 ½ hours for both ears. The scars are very well hidden behind the ear.
At least one week is recommended before returning to school
Although other cosmetic surgical procedures may get more attention, perhaps neck lift surgery should be the one you consider first. After all, your neck can be one of the first places to show your real age. And it’s not just advancing age that can affect the look of your neck. Hereditary fat deposits (such as the dreaded double or even triple chin) and gravity can also take their toll. When the skin under your chin slackens, you can develop “turkey neck” or “turkey wattle.”
Whether your neck is affected by age, your genes, the pull of gravity or the harsh effects of the sun and wind, neck lift surgery or other neck contouring and rejuvenation procedures may be options. In a nutshell, a neck lift removes excess sagging skin under your jawline and on your neck. The platysma muscle of your neck can be adjusted and tightened if it has begun to separate and sag.
If you only have excess fat under your chin or along your jawline, chin liposuction alone may be enough to enhance the appearance of your neck. Another emerging option is lipodissolve. This experimental “fat-melting” technology is also known as mesotherapy or injection lipolysis. It involves a series of medicated injections that may melt away unwanted small, localized areas of fat such as those in your chin area.
Eyelid surgery is one of the most common and simple facial surgeries performed with minimal downtime. The ideal candidate for this surgery is someone who has heavy eyelids that create a tired appearance. Some eyelid surgeries can even be performed under a local anesthetic.
Incisions are hidden within the natural crease of the eyelid lending to a more natural look following the procedure. Bruising and swelling are typical immediately following the surgery but reduce quickly. Makeup may be applied to the eye 1 week following the surgery.
You can return to work when you are comfortable with your appearance but normal activities can be resumed in 2 weeks.
Our face is our most visible feature. Our expressions and appearance convey what we feel. Skin laxity and muscle weakness constitute facial aging. This can result in jowls, deep folds around the mouth and can give a tired appearance to the face.
A facelift restores a more youthful and rested look by tightening muscles and removing excess skin and improving skin tone. Following the surgery there will be swelling along the cheeks and neck area as well as bruising along the jaw line and neck.
It is recommended that at least 7-10 days be taken off before returning to work. Makeup may be applied to camflouge bruising and the incisions after 1 week. It will take 4 weeks for the swelling to be visually reduced.
